Fire Faerie Milk for Beltane

As we move into Fae season, I couldn’t help but think about one of my most favorite beverage—faerie milk. You’ll often find faerie milk at some Wiccan circles and ceremonies, given as an offering to the Fae. It is known for aiding in fertility, which makes sense during the spring season, as we are in the time of year when we are beckoning things to grow. Faerie milk can be anything from simple warmed milk or warmed milk with honey and spices; I’ve always added lavender to my faerie milk, a little twist I learned from another witch.

For this year, I wanted to try something different. As sweet, fulfilling, and classic as the tried-and-true faerie milk is, I never felt it completely captured the essence of the Fae. When I was young and learning about the Fae, it was clear that they are not to be toyed with. As fun and as sweet as they can be, you’re more likely to run into Fae that are tricky, sneaky, and hot-headed, so I wanted to make something for our more stubborn friends as well.

The Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. of your favorite milk product (I personally use almond milk.)
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1 tsp. dried lavender
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken

Optional: A mixture of honey, sugar, and cayenne pepper for the rim of the glass, if you’d like

The Flavor

The lavender gives this milk a floral taste, but not so much that it has the soapy flavor that can so easily happen when using too much lavender in cooking. The cayenne pepper adds heat to the back of the throat, paralleling the two distinct flavors. I drink this when feeling unwell, and it makes me feel quite content.

The Magic

  • When used in offerings, it is said that the Fae love sweetness, and this drink has a natural sweetness to it. Also, science has speculated that consuming spicy foods with others aids in bonding. If you are asking Fae to work with you, indulging in this drink with them may help create a bond.
  • The cinnamon has a warmth and action-oriented energy.
  • Milk and honey aid in fertility, comfort, creation, and warmth.
  • Lavender represents and increases fertility, creativity, and ideas.

As you can tell from the properties listed above, this is an ideal drink for teamwork. Sharing this drink with a partner or team member will not only help with brainstorming new ideas and bringing new endeavors but with bonding you to your partner as well.

Prepare

  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan on medium heat, until the milk starts to steam.
  2. Add in the honey, cinnamon, pepper, and lavender.
  3. Lower heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes while you prepare your glasses. Pour honey on one plate and the sugar, cayenne pepper, and lavender on another plate. Press rim of glass into the honey, followed by the sugar and spice mixture.
  4. Remove the milk from heat and let cool for a couple of minutes. Then pour, serve, and enjoy!
